Romeo and Juliet’ Stars Sue Paramount for Child Abuse Over Nude Scene in 1968 Film

Olivia Hussey and Leonard Whiting were just teenagers when they electrified audiences in the 1968 version of “Romeo and Juliet,” directed by Franco Zeffirelli. The film was a hit and was nominated for four Academy Awards, but it also stirred controversy over a bedroom scene which included images of Whiting’s buttocks and Hussey’s bare breasts.

Now in their 70s, Hussey and Whiting filed a lawsuit in Santa Monica Superior Court on Friday, accusing Paramount of sexually exploiting them and distributing nude images of adolescent children.

The suit alleges that Zeffirelli — who died in 2019 — assured both actors that there would be no nudity in the film, and that they would wear flesh-colored undergarments in the bedroom scene. But in the final days of filming, the director allegedly implored them to perform in the nude with body makeup, “or the Picture would fail.”

Hussey was 15 at the time and Whiting was 16. According to the complaint, Zeffirelli showed them where the camera would be positioned, and assured them that no nudity would be photographed or released in the film. The suit alleges that he was being dishonest and that Whiting and Hussey were in fact filmed nude without their knowledge.

“What they were told and what went on were two different things,” said Tony Marinozzi, who is a business manager for both actors. “They trusted Franco. At 16, as actors, they took his lead that he would not violate that trust they had. Franco was their friend, and frankly, at 16, what do they do? There are no options. There was no #MeToo.”

According to the complaint, Hussey and Whiting have suffered mental anguish and emotional distress in the 55 years since the film’s release, and have also lost out on job opportunities. Despite their breakout performances, Hussey and Whiting had only very limited acting careers after “Romeo and Juliet.”

They are seeking damages “believed to be in excess of $500 million.”

“Nude images of minors are unlawful and shouldn’t be exhibited,” said the actors’ attorney, Solomon Gresen, in an interview. “These were very young naive children in the ’60s who had no understanding of what was about to hit them. All of a sudden they were famous at a level they never expected, and in addition they were violated in a way they didn’t know how to deal with.”

The lawsuit relies in part on a California law that temporarily suspended the statute of limitations for older claims of child sexual abuse. The courts saw an influx of complaints against the Boy Scouts of America and the Catholic Church, among other organizations, in the days leading up to the Dec. 31 deadline.

Paramount did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

In a 2018 interview with Variety, Hussey defended the nude scene.

“Nobody my age had done that before,” she said, adding that Zeffirelli shot it tastefully. “It was needed for the film.”

In another 2018 interview with Fox News, she said that the scene was “taboo” in America, but that nudity was already common in European films at the time.

“It wasn’t that big of a deal,” she said. “And Leonard wasn’t shy at all! In the middle of shooting, I just completely forgot I didn’t have clothes on.”

Nottingham Forest Set To Offload Striker 5 Months After £20M

English Premier League club Nottingham Forest is prepared to offload Nigerian international Emmanuel Dennis who joined last summer. The Super Eagles forward joined the Premier League returnees for an agreed fee of about £20million.

Emmanuel Dennis was impressive for Watford during the 2021/2022 season netting 10 goals and also creating six assists, but it could not help the club which eventually got relegated.

His move to Forest has not been of much impact as he only managed to start three games so far this season, scoring just one goal.

Complete Sports reports that the club manager Steve Cooper is prepared to bolster his squad in January, but they must first offload some players. It was gathered that Dennis is one of the players they are looking to allow to leave before the end of the winter transfer window. The Nigerian will then have an option of moving abroad, but if he wants to remain in England, he would only be eligible to return to Watford.

Real Madrid Hands Mbappe 1 Condition to Restart Transfer Negotiations

Real Madrid have not fully given up their pursuit to sign Kylian Mbappe from Paris Saint-Germain, following the Frenchman’s superb showing at the 2022 FIFA World Cup. Mbappe, who turned down an opportunity to join Real Madrid previously, is seemingly unhappy at PSG and is itching for a move away from the French champions, despite only penning a lucrative three-year deal last summer

According to Madrid Universal, Real Madrid are open to restarting the negotiations with PSG for the Frenchman - if the player personally hands his club a transfer request.

The La Liga champions have no intention to replicate the month-long transfer saga from the summer, when the attacker changed his mind at the last minute to stay with PSG.

Mbappe’s current deal with the Parisians is set to expire in 2025 and the French champions are expected to place a huge transfer fee on the French forward, estimated to be over a €100million.

The 2022 World Cup golden ball winner turned down an opportunity to sign for Los Blancos last summer, but the Spanish giants re-ignited interest in the 24-year-old after his World Cup heroics. However, Real Madrid are now considering sacrificing their push to sign Mbappe so they could instead bring in two young prospects.

Chelsea Transfer update

We are three days into the January transfer window and the Blues' winter business is fully underway. Deals for Benoit Badiashile and David Datro Fofana have already been completed and Enzo Fernandez continues to be heavily pursued.

A number of players continue to be linked, including the likes of Rafael Leao, Joao Felix and Jude Bellingham. It's expected to be one of the busiest windows at Stamford Bridge this month and Todd Boehly's cheque book is set to see a similar expenditure as the summer.

While the recruitment team in west London lay out their plans for the winter window, Chelsea's calendar has a number of difficult tests, starting on Thursday evening against Manchester City. Graham Potter welcomes Pep Guardiola's men in the first of two contests against the title chasers.

With that said, keep the blog on lock as we bring you all the latest transfer news.

Chelsea duo Reece James and N'Golo Kante appear to be edging closer to returning to fitness.

Manchester United legend Gary Neville has criticised Chelsea for their proposed move to sign Benfica midfielder Enzo Fernandez, singling out the hefty price tag that has been reported.

Writing on social media, Neville said: "Are Chelsea paying €127m for Enzo Fernandez? That's one hell of a price. A very good player but bloody hell!"

Jude Bellingham is set to meet with Borussia Dortmund officials before 6 January, where he will inform them that he wants to leave this summer. The German club will seek a total of £124m for the midfielder.

Jude Bellingham looks set to snub a move to the Premier League in favour of a big money transfer to Real Madrid.

The Borussia Dortmund talent will be at the centre of a huge bidding war in the summer transfer window as Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester City prepare to fight for his signature. The 19-year-old's stock has risen significantly following an impressive World Cup campaign with England in Qatar.

Bellingham's close friendship with Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson and Trent Alexander-Arnold has sparked speculation that he prefers a move to Anfield. The England international revealed that City forward Erling Haaland - a teammate during their time together at Dortmund - is still in regular contact with him, and Bellingham may use a similar analytical method to the Norwegian striker to decide his next club.

The 19-year-old won't be cheap, with his Dortmund contract set to expire in 2025, meaning the Bundesliga club could command a huge fee for his services. With that said, here's a look at the latest on the Blues' pursuit of one of England's potentially great footballing talents.

Bellingham's January timeline has been revealed by Bundesliga expert Jan Aage Fjortoft ahead of a month not expected to yield any tangible changes to his situation.

With a summer deal much more likely Bellingham has now returned to Dortmund ahead of a mid-season training camp in Marbella. The Bundesliga is on its winter break meaning there is no competitive action for for the teenager until January 22.

Despite Carlo Ancelotti saying that Madrid won't be making any deals in January ESPN report that Los Blancos see the window as a chance to speed up proceedings ahead of a move in the summer.

It is said that they could table a €100million (£88.6million) bid in order to buy him. Although he is seen as a major target, there is no intention to make 'crazy' offers

Real Madrid will prioritise a deal for Jude Bellingham in 2023, with the midfielder set to choose Los Blancos over Liverpool, according to GOAL. Bellingham has always been top of Madrid's list, regardless of their interest in the Benfica midfielder.

The plan would see Bellingham line up alongside the likes of Aurelien Tchouameni, Eduardo Camavinga and Federico Valverde, creating a world-class midfield for the next decade to match the heights of Casemiro, Toni Kroos and Luka Modric.

Jude Bellingham could be on the move for just £60million if the sensational reported secret release clause is genuine, and that would be bad news for Chelsea in their hopes of signing the midfielder.

Dortmund want at least £100m - possibly even more - for the England ace. However, according to the Daily Mail, Bellingham's Dortmund contract allegedly has a shock £60m release clause included.

That would make the Three Lions World Cup ace totally affordable for the clubs interested, but Chelsea could lose out as a result. Should Chelsea trigger that apparent release clause, it may still not be enough to convince the youngster to head to Stamford Bridge.

Liverpool Boss Jurgen Klopp has laughed off the chances of Liverpool signing Bellingham in January. The Reds are also after the 19-year-old as they attempt to deal with midfield issues of their own, but the German manager isn't expecting much to happen over the winter.

He has a good relationship with Dortmund having managed them in a successful run before moving to Anfield, but Klopp admitted deals of the size of Bellingham aren't easily done.

He said: "[Laughs] In January?, I'm the wrong person. Are you from the buying side or the selling side? I'm the wrong person to ask that, you'll have to ask other people about that.

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola was full of praise for Bellingham earlier this season when his side faced Dortmund in the Champions League. The Spaniard told reporters: "Borussia Dortmund is the perfect place for young talent to come.

"Maybe if Jude Bellingham was in England he would go to City, United, Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal or Tottenham, maybe he would not get the minutes. The best thing for a young player to be better is to play minutes. He was 17 when he arrived but it was not just about his quality, how he was leading, his kicking, going to the referee.

"This guy was something special in terms of his mentality. Now he is 19 and he is already one of the captains. The quality, everybody knows it. The whole package is really good."

Borussia Dortmund are said to have set a price tag of £150million for Bellingham's signature in the transfer window, however that could be reduced further. The German club are willing to accept as low as £83million if they receive the transfer funds in one up front payment.
